Cannavaro being lined up by Spurs

March 31, 2009

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro is said to be a target for Spurs as the central defenders contract is due to expire with Real Madrid in the summer.

The 35 year old is yet to sign a new contract with the Madrid giants and it looks increasingly likely he will be allowed to move on after this season.

“The future is not my principal problem and if I were to stop I would still have had a wonderful career,” he stated.

RVP wants Arsenal to step up to the plate

March 31, 2009

Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie is at an advanced stage of negotiations with the club over a new contract but he wants the club to match his ambitions before finally agreeing to sign.

Van Persie still has a year and a half on his current deal but Arsenal are keen to get him tied down especially as Barcelona are reportedly showing interest.

“Financially Arsenal’s last offer is fine, but that isn’t everything for me. It’s about my ambitions and how they can be fulfilled.

“The club and I want the same, and it’s our intention to achieve that. We have all the other factors in place - fantastic stadium, dedicated support and money in the bank.

“Now it’s about making that final push. In the last four years, I’ve only won one prize, the FA Cup - and that is too little. I want to push through to achieve more.

“That is something I feel in my mind and my body. It’s difficult to explain, but I certainly feel I can play an important role in taking Arsenal to a higher level.”

Van Persie picked up  groin injury in the 3-0 win over Scotland at the weekend and it looks like being a race against time to see if he is fit for Arsenals next match after being ruled out of Holland’s midweek game with Macedonia.

“Football is Nothing” - Says Drogba

March 31, 2009

“Football is Nothing, you are talking about the deaths of 19 people” said Chelsea striker Didier Drogba in response to the Ivory Coast stadium tragedy on Sunday in which 19 people lost their lives.

The incident happened before the kick off in Ivory Coasts 5-0 World Cup qualifier win against Malawi at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in the Ivorian capital Abidjan. As well as the 19 killed, over 130 people are reported injured. It seems that thronging fans otside the stadium began pushing and shoving in order to gain access which set off panic resulting in a deadly stampede. The weight of the fans pushing forward apparently caused a wall to collapse, leading to the fatalities.

Eye witnesses however, contradicted this saying that it was police firing tear gas into the surging crowd which lead to the tragedy.

Senior Ivorian Football federation member Anzouan Kacou further slammed the police as negligent and put the blame squarely on them as a result of firing tear gas inside a packed stadium. An eye witness described the appalling scenes inside the stadium “We saw people falling from the top stands. The stampede was provoked by the security forces who threw tear gas canisters at us. I don’t know why they fired on us”

Fc Barcelona star Yaya Toure who also played in the game for Ivory coast  commented in a state of shock: “It’s an absolute tragedy. We all know this is a tough time and I’d like to send my support” he added “We need to do well in this competition for all those who have died.”

Fifa have confirmed that they are conducting a full enquiry into the disaster and will be anxiuos to quell the fears of many who have questioned Africa’s suitability to hold next years world cup in light of this and several other deadly statdium disasters on the continent.

Bremen stars back in training

March 31, 2009

All Werder Bremen players not with their respective national teams have returned to the Green-Whites training grounds. Mesut Özil and Sebastian Boenisch are still slightly banged up but were able to get back to team training, just like Torsten Frings. “I am just fine - I can play again but I still sense a bit of my injury,” said Boenisch. Frings has increased his training intensity day by day and said: “Tuesday everything should be completely okay.”

Claudio Pizarro was also on the pitch again though he was the only Werder player to complete an individual training session. “I am not yet fully fit again. But I am doing better and hope to return to team training on Wednesday,” said the Peruvian.

Further good news came from assistant coach Wolfgang Rolff, who said: “All national team players who played on the weekend have contacted us and said they are healthy

Bilic tops Schalke’s list

March 30, 2009

Schalke sacked manager Fred Rutten last week after a run of poor results and performances and it is believed that Croatia manager Slaven Bilic is their top choice for the job.

Bilic, who speaks fluent German, would not have to leave the Croatian team as there won’t be any international games until June, excluding Wednesday’s qualifier with Andorra.

Schalke are currently in eighth position with just nine matches left to play.
