Neuer insists he is staying with Shalke
October 30, 2009
Manuel Neuer insists he wants to stay with Schalke 04. The goalkeeper continues to deny a possible move to Bayern Munich, despite speculations about a transfer to the Bavarian giants in January.
Recent reports have suggested Schalke may be forced to cash-in on Neuer to ease their financial problems, but the Germany international says he will be staying at Schalke.
I am going to stay, this issue was a public issue already last summer,” Neuer told Rheinische Post newspaper. ” Then I also stayed on at Schalke 04.
“I am a Schalke player and I absolutely like being a Schalke player.”
Asked about the new rumours of interest from Bayern Munich, Neuer said: “I am not going to end up part of speculation!”
Wigan sack King
October 30, 2009
Marlon King was sacked by Wigan Athletic after being jailed Thursday for 18 months following a conviction for sexual assault and actual bodily harm.
King was sent to prison for an incident in a London nightclub in December when, while he was on loan to Wigan’s English Premier League rivals Hull, he groped a young woman and then broke her nose after she spurned his advances.
A striker with north-west side Wigan, King was found guilty of violently attacking a 20-year-old university student.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told Sky Sports television King would be sacked after a mandatory notice period had expired.
“We have to follow the rules and regulations, which means we will have to give him 14 days’ notice that his contract will be cancelled,” Whelan said.
“He is absolutely sacked – we will not tolerate football players who get sent to jail for 18 months. As far as we are concerned, he is finished with football at Wigan Athletic.”
Whelan added: “Young people look up to professional footballers and we must have standards. At Wigan we’re mad keen on setting standards and our players, generally, are absolutely brilliant.
“It can happen to any club – this has happened while the lad was on loan to Hull. I don’t blame Hull in any way, shape or form, but we have to stand up and be counted.”
King joined Wigan from Watford for five million pounds (8.3 million dollars) in January 2008 and Whelan said: “I do personally regret the day we signed him.
“I always thought his heart and soul wasn’t in being a professional footballer. We loaned him out last year, we were trying to off-load him this year and couldn’t.”
The court heard how King, 29, was celebrating his wife’s pregnancy and scoring a winning goal hours earlier in Hull’s 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough.
After he was repeatedly “cold-shouldered” by women in the bar, he lost his temper with the victim and in an outburst of “completely gratuitous violence” lashed out at her, “smashing” her to the floor, the court heard.
He had denied the charges, claiming he was a victim of mistaken identity.
Jamaica international King, born in south London, has had several previous brushes with the law.
In 2002, he spent five months in prison when found at the wheel of a stolen BMW car, an incident that happened after he’d been given a community rehabilitation order for trying to buy a laptop with a cloned credit card and damaging property when detained by store security staff.
King found himself involved in more off-field controversy when, in November 2008, he was allegedly involved in a fracas with Hull team-mate Dean Windass in a casino in Scarborough, northern England.
And in December – just days before the nightclub incident – King was banned from driving for 56 days after being caught speeding at 106mph on a road where the limit was 60mph.

Spurs Ease by Everton and Look Ahead to Arsenal
October 29, 2009
Knowing that the Toffees would bring a tough game, Spurs hosted Everton in the Carling Cup fourth round draw on Tuesday. With injuries, Harry Redknapp had to make several changes to the lineup and that showed just how deep the Spurs bench is this year as they won 2-0 with goals from Tom Huddlestone and Robbie Keane.
In the 30th minute, David Bentley gave a great cross in that Huddlestone netted with a left foot volley. Their second goal started with a penalty kick after a foul on Keane. Keane’s kick was saved, Bentley was on the follow up but failed to knock it in, Bale’s shot was blocked, and it amazingly fell back to Keane and he volleyed it home from six yards out. With their win they are progressing to the final eight along with Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Portsmouth, Aston Villa, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City.
Harry was “well pleased with the lads” after the match as he said, “We were excellent, we passed the ball superbly at times.” He was especially pleased with David Bentley. He said, “David Bentley was outstanding, he had a terrific night and Alan Hutton got up and supported him on the right.” He continued, “All the lads that came in did well and I was delighted. That’s what good clubs do and good teams do, they have injuries but the lads who come in do well and give the manager selection problems. We can give any team a game and you saw that tonight – it was a terrific performance.”
Now Spurs get ready to face Arsenal in the London derby this weekend. Peter Crouch is returning from a midweek groin injury, Lennon is out with an ankle injury, and King is hopeful to play after having knee problems and a bit of a virus. After Woodgate took a knock at Stoke, they feared he had fractured a cheekbone but scans confirmed no break and he’s fine. Luka Modrić and Giovani dos Santos remain sidelined, and Jermain Defoe is still out on a red card.
With Lennon injured, Bentley is likely to start against his old club. Everyone is hoping for another Bentley wonder goal as we saw last year at the Emirates when Spurs held Gunners to a 4-4 draw. Roman Pavlyuchenko was hopeful for a start but with the return of Crouch, it’s unlikely the Russian will be in the starting lineup.
Captain Robbie Keane insists that Spurs are stronger than their London neighbors and are more than capable of a win. So with that, Spurs get set to travel across town for the weekend.

Ronaldo out for another week
October 29, 2009
Crisitano Ronaldo’s ankle sprain is recovering but the Portuguese international winger will have to undergo further medical tests in a week before the can return to the pitch, Real Madrid said Wednesday.
The announcement means the 94-million-euro signing will likely miss the Spanish giants’s Champions League match at AC Milan on Tuesday.
Real said the 24-year-old underwent an MRI on Wednesday which showed the injury was “healing favourably and that swelling of the bone edema has decreased.”
“Despite this improvement, a minor bone edema has been found in the centre of his right ankle. The player must remain inactive until he undergoes another examination in one week?s time,” it said in a statement posted on its website.
Ronaldo has been injured ever since Real’s 3-0 Champions League win over Marseille at the end of September when he was tackled by the French side’s Senegalese defender Souleymane Diawara.
At the time the club said the player would likely be out for between three and four weeks but Ronaldo aggravated the injury during Portugal’s 3-0 victory over Hungary on October 10 when he limped off the pitch after just 27 minutes.
Real has suffered three losses without Ronaldo, including a 4-0 Cup rout away to third-division club Alcorcon on Tuesday.
