England’s Problem Midfield

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard

Lampard or Gerrard, England’s midfield dilemma

Previously thought untouchable, injury meant Steven Gerrard missed out on the World Cup qualifying wins against Andorra and Croatia while Frank Lampard has hit top form. Why should England have this problem? It has nothing to do with legue rivalries, or it shouldn’t. Look at the Spanish League for example, the starting line up of the Euro 2008 final t mainly consisted of players from the top three teams in the Spanish League, Barcalona, Real Madrid and Villereal Xavi, Villa, Casillas, Silva, Iniesta and Senna. This team is full of historic rivalries more than skin deep, rivalries that go back to the Spanish civil war.

The England vs. Kasakhstan game was not a good example of Gerrard and Lampards footballing qualities, when they play together they cancel each other out, Capello must realise that they can play together and that even though Gerrard can play any where it does not mean you can put him any where, such as right midfield. The only way these two top plays can play together is if Lampard plays central attacking midfield and Gerrard should play defensive midfield.
