Becks Makes AC Bow
January 6, 2009
David Beckham played in a Milan shirt for the first time on Tuesday when the Rossoneri overcame German side Hamburg in a friendly in Dubai.
Beckham began a three month loan spell with the Serie A giants as he saw his new side run out 4-3 winners on penalties against the Bundesliga outfit after the teams were locked at 1-1 following 90 minutes of play.
Ronaldinho put the Italians in front in the 63rd minute via the penalty spot but this was cancelled out when Collin Benjamin netted for the Germans only four minutes later. Milan proceeded to claim victory in the shootout.
This is the latest episode in what has proved to be an illustrious career for the England International. After spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid and current employers L.A Galaxy, Becks, yet again, finds himself playing amongst some of the world’s most exciting footballers with Ronaldinho and Kaka for company at the San Siro and he is looking forward to the prospect: “I’ve never played in the Italian league before so it’s going to be exciting for me.”
Manager Carlo Ancelotti was impressed with his latest recruit’s debut: “To me he gave a very good impression…Dynamic quality and also he is an intelligent player.”
Beckham will return to the MLS in March after what should prove to be an intriguing period as he experiences life in Italy’s top division. There is no doubt in which direction the cameras will be pointing in Milan over the forthcoming months.

Another Shooting Star heading for Galaxy far far away?
October 27, 2008
In a week which has seen the MLS’s biggest attraction all but agree a loan move back to Europe, the player who’s arguably the biggest star in the league has stated his desire to try his luck there too.
Landon Donovan, has come out and said that he wants to try and have another go at playing in Europe. The 26-year-old has already played in Germany, but it proved to be a disappointment to all.
Donovan started his professional career with Bayer Leverkusen, but did not feature in the first team before he was loaned to MLS side San Jose. On returning to Leverkusen in 2005, the two-time ‘U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year’ only made 2 starts and 5 substitute appearances.
The player who yesterday wrapped up the 2008 MLS golden boot with his 20th goal, made the request to quit MLS, it comes at the end of a week in which his Galaxy captain David Beckham’s commitment to the LA cause has been called into question following news of his desire to play for another team over the winter.
Donovan has identified England and Spain as his preferred destination.
“I’d love to play in the Premiership, I think that would be incredible,” Donovan said following the Galaxy’s final game of the season.
“I’d love to play in Spain.
“Whether that happens I don’t know but I think where my qualities are best would be in a team that plays. I’m not going to go and battle John Terry and expect to win but if I can get on a team that plays good soccer I think I could help.”
“I watch games every weekend and it’s exciting watching those games and I think I could contribute on a lot of teams,” Donovan added, when asked specifically about English football. “It would be a much easier fit than most places, for sure.”
Harry Redknapp, did put in a late bid for the US international before he returned to California three years ago, but it seems unlikely that he’d be a target for the new Spurs boss.
Fulham have a recent history of American players, with the likes of Brian McBride, Carlos Bocanegra, Eddie Lewis and Kasey Keller - But Current manager Roy Hodgson has reduced the number of US nationals to two with Clint Dempsey still playing and Eddie Johnson out on loan.
There have not been any teams in La Liga or the Premiership strongly linked, but Jurgen Klinsmann’s Bayern Munich have been mentioned a few times since the summer.
Donovan who has 105 caps for his country, is aware that lots could happen between now and January but reaffirmed his desire.
“Obviously, there’s a lot of ifs. If the Galaxy is okay with me going, if the League is willing to accept an offer, if an offer comes.
“In my situation I can’t be super picky but if it’s the right offer and makes sense with the right team - there’s a lot of ifs.
“But from my standpoint I’m ready to take that step and I want to.
“Competitively I have that itch and I want to go and I will make that very clear to people.”
It is not completely clear what sort of move could be in store for the forward, or where he may go. But don’t be surprised to see the pacy American in Europe in the New Year, be it on loan or not.
Beckham hails Galaxy comeback
July 20, 2008
LA Galaxy captain David Beckham hailed his side’s fighting spirit after a late equaliser from USA star Landon Donovan earned a 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
Donovan’s injury time cross floated over the heads of numerous players, including Galaxy teammate Edson Buddle’s, and into the far corner of the goal.
“It was a cross, of course,” Galaxy coach Ruud Gullit said. “But he kicked it so well, if Edson had touched it, it would have gone in as well.
“So the keeper didn’t know what to do. Just the quality of the play itself made it difficult for the goalkeeper,” Gullit said.
The Red Bulls had looked likely to snatch all three points after taking a 2-1 lead thanks to a brilliant goal from ex-Colombia and Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel.
Beckham was pleased his team fought until the end, and were rewarded with the draw.
“There were chances for both teams but we showed a lot of character,” Beckham said. “We were disappointed to go in 1-1 at halftime because they scored through our sloppy play.
“Then we came out second half, they got a goal but we kept on battling and we didn’t look as if we were going to get a goal but we did in the end.
“It showed the character in the team, especially when we’re not playing as well as we can, to come back. So overall, maybe a draw was fair tonight.”
The match drew a MLS season-high 46,754 fans.
After Donovan’s equalizer, the Galaxy nearly stole the victory when Beckham sent in a cross from the right that found Donovan - whose left-foot shot hit the Red Bulls upright.
