Corinthians return to Brazil’s elite
October 26, 2008
After almost eleven months of suffering, Corinthians returned to the Brazilian top flight on Saturday after a 2-0 victory over Ceara at the Pacaembu stadium in Sao Paulo.
In the 8th minute Douglas put them ahead when he slotted the ball in from close range after an initial Herrera header came off the crossbar.
Mano Menezes team continued to dominate their opponents as the match progressed, and doubled their advantage four minutes into the second half through the set piece master, centre back Chicao who beat Adilson with a precise finish.
Corinthians, who have won the Brazilian Championship four timesand one world club cup, dominated the remainder of the match, and could have extended their lead on numerous opportunities. They were well worth their victory and of their place in the elite of Brazilian football next season.
The final whistle set off wild celebrations from the 40,000 Corinthians fans who packed the Pacaembu, and their delight almost got completely out of hand, as the fans tried to enter the field of play in order to take home some souvenirs!
What capped off a memorable afternoon for the Corinthians fans was the 3-0 defeat of their city rivals Palmeiras to Fluminense. The loss means Palmeiras are now practically out of the race for the Brazilian Serie A title.
