Keegan Future In Doubt

September 3, 2008

Yesterday lunchtime it seemed assured. The bookies were taking bets on his successor and it was revealed that he had not arrived for training. One thing was obvious Kevin Keegan had either been sacked or had resigned as Newcastle United manager.

Yet late in the afternoon Newcastle released a statement saying “For the avoidance of doubt, the club has not sacked Kevin Keegan as manager”. Richard Bevan of the League Managers Association also released a statement announcing that Keegan had not resigned.

Confused? I sure was. Newcastle has today gone some way to clear up some of that confusion. A new statement released this morning announced “Both the club and Kevin would like to reiterate that Kevin remains as manager. He has not resigned nor has he been sacked” they also said that talks between Keegan and the board were ‘ongoing’.

Lets face it; it’s not unlike Keegan to jump ship when times are hard and who can blame him here. In charge of a team which King Kev himself admitted could not break into the top four and wouldn’t be able to sign anybody. Well they managed to get defender Fabricio Coloccini and striker Xisco but they sold away one of their better players in James Milner.

This is another problem inherent as St. James Park, Mike Ashley wanted to get rid of Joey Barton, Michael Owen and Milner. Keegan wanted to keep all three. With opinions as contrasting as this and with Dennis Wise milling about the place making Keegan uncomfortable its some wonder that Keegan didn’t resign months ago.

With the King absent from training once again on Wednesday and talks still ongoing it appears that Newcastle United will again be in the news for quite some time.
