Following two wins in a row, Plymouth Argyle almost managed an impressive home win against second place Reading in the Championship on Saturday. The Greens’ relegation fears were eased with seven points from a possible nine before the game and they were hoping to push closer to safety with another win whilst in form.
A 20th minute strike by Paul Gallagher following a neat header from young striker Ashley Barnes gave the home side the lead. Gallagher who was later substituted through injury for Rory Fallon has managed 12 goals so far in this campaign. Reading retaliated two minutes later through Alex Pearce before young Argyle defender Craig Cathcart was substituted for Hungarian Centre back Kriztian Timar.
The game was tied at half time in a scrappy bout on a poor quality pitch. Plymouth attacked the game in the second half and regained the lead on the 56th minute through a spectacular long shot from Jamie Mackie, as the youngster’s enthusiasm finally paid off.
Unfortunately for the home side, Reading managed a strong finish to the game and levelled on the 80th minute through Jimmy Kebe, however, they could have easily taken three points.
Argyle’s position didn’t change due to other results in the league, however, they are now seven points away from 50 points, the mark where according to manager Paul Sturrock, Argyle should be safe from relegation. With an increased crowd of 14,000 – the third highest at Home Park this season, the feeling around the club is far more optimistic than it was a few weeks ago.
