This season has been disappointing to say the least for Norwich, and today summed up the season so far in a nutshell. A strong work ethic is just not enough and far too often the Canaries have been found wanting in terms of quality. Reading were far too good for Norwich and it was clear to see, for all 26,000 fans.
Not surprisingly the full house at Carrow Road produced a terrific atmosphere, but sadly the football did not quite match the volume. However, Norwich put in a spirited first half performance, with Cody McDonald in his first start for the Canaries, proving that he deserves to be playing at this level.
Norwich had a lot of possession over the first forty five minutes but Reading’s defence held firm and the Canaries were unable to force their way through. Clingan, Carney and McDonald all went close for the home side but at half time the score stayed at nil nil.
Reading are a quality side and Norwich knew that they would have to produce their best form if three points was to be achieved. However, there were signs that Reading were going to spoil the party, with Shane Long looking dangerous up front. Long’s form has been indifferent this season, but he appeared to have his sharpness back for this game.
On 68 minutes, Reading went ahead through that man again, Shane Long. Jimmy Kebe put in a good cross, and Long was left unmarked to head the ball in from close range. Norwich have given away far too many goals from crosses and set pieces into the box this season, with this just another example of poor marking.
Norwich knew they had to get something from the game but there was a feeling that it was somehow getting away from them and time was now running out. Ten minutes later and things got even worse for the home side. Long 2, Norwich nil. Another Kebe cross, and another Long goal.
Reading’s second goal effectively killed off any chance of Norwich getting back into the game and the home side offered little as the clock ticked down. The game ended 2-0 to Reading and leaves Norwich on the brink of relegation.
If Barnsley lose their last game away to Plymouth and Norwich win away at Charlton, then the great escape is still on, but the truth is that Norwich simply have not been good enough this season.
League One may well beckon, and on this season’s evidence, that is where this Canaries’ team belongs. Sad, but true for a club that only left the top flight in 2005, but then again the same could be said for Charlton and Southampton.
It is a funny old game football, but if you are a Norwich supporter, it will be hard to see the funny side tonight.
Will Sargent.
