Guiza backs Aragones

October 7, 2008

Fenerbahce striker Daniel Guiza has insisted manager Luis Aragones will not be forced out of the Turkish club despite their poor start to the season.

The Spanish forward, who was part of Aragones successful Euro 2008 winning squad, is confident the 70-year-old will soon reverse the fortunes of the Turkish club.

“After six matches without a win it is normal that a coach is affected but Luis’ motto is to continue working day by day and seeing if we can move things forward,” the 28-year-old told Spanish media.

“I believe and hope that his days are not numbered. We can win our next match and lift our heads,” he added.

The weekends 4-1 defeat to Kayserispor left the Istanbul-based club in 12th position in the Turkish Super League.

The 70-year-old coach signed a two-year contract with Fenerbahce in July in a deal worth three million euros but Spanish sports daily Marca has reported that he can break it without paying a penalty.

He told reporters after the latest Turkish league match that he had no plans to quit.

Guiza, who finished top scorer in La Liga last season for Real Mallorca before following his compatriot to Turkey, insists he is happy at the Turkish club even if Aragones was to leave.

“It is a shame that things are not going well for us but I don’t regret having signed with this club because I am enjoying myself and the fans want me here,” he said. “I signed for four years and I have to fulfill that.”
