Standard crushed by Brugge

The joy of knocking out Everton to qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Cup was short lived for Standard Liege as they were crushed 4-1 by Cercle Brugge on Sunday.

The Belgian champions fell behind just before the break to a strike from De Smet, but hit back through Sarr in the 52nd minute.

At this point, Standard were already down to ten as Dante conceded a second yellow card in the 40th minute.

Cercle were the better side in the second half, and Portier restored their lead just after the hour mark.

Standard were reduced to nine men in the 82nd minute after Ingrao was shown a straight red card, before Cercle added two more goals to make an emphatic 4-1 scoreline.

Standard have the same amount of points as Anderlecht, but the Brussels outfit have a better goal difference and occupy the top spot.
