Fiorentina On Course for Qualification
October 21, 2009
It’s two wins out of three for the viola in the Champions League as they edged out Debrecen 4-3 in a high scoring encounter.
It wasn’t a great start for Prandelli’s side as they were behind in the first minute. But the team in purple soon hit back with two goals from Adrian Mutu and a cool finish from high flying Gilardino, who has been on some fantastic form lately for Italy, to make it 3-1 with only 19 minutes played. Debrecen hit back in the 27th minute to cut the lead down to one goal. But that only lasted nine minutes as Santana placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner to silence the home fans and put the away side 4-2 up.
The second half wasn’t as entertaining as the first with only one goal scored by Debrecen, who for the second time brought Fiorentina’s lead back to one goal. The four goals in the first half were enough to see Fiorentina past the finish line and record their second win in the group.
This important win for Prandelli’s men puts them second in group E with six points, and only one point of leaders Lyon, who snatched a late winner to defeat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield. That loss leaves Gerrards Liverpool struggling in third with only 3 points.
