Juve insist defender not for sale

December 29, 2009

Despite numerous rumors linking him with a January move to England, Juventus stated clearly on Monday that Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini was not on the transfer block for the coming transfer window.

Chiellini, 25, had been linked by media reports with moves to Manchester City and Manchester United, the latter desperately needing a boost to its injury-depleted defensive corps. Juve, though, were in denial mode on their club’s Web site.

Juve sporting director Alessio Secco decided to speak out on Monday after goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was added to the rumour mill for a possible transfer away from Turin. He also added his club’s desire to keep top players with Juve.

“We are used to reading about interest in our players by other teams like Buffon or Chiellini,” Secco said on the club site. “I want to assert that this is totally fake news.”

Chiellini has been a fixture at full-back for the Bianconeri since joining from Fiorentina in 2005, and he has also appeared 27 times for the Azzurri, likely securing him a spot in the World Cup squad.
