Defending Ligue One champions Olympique Lyon got their season off to a great start with a 3-0 victory over Toulouse on Sunday, propelling them straight to the top of the table.
New coach Claude Puel got off to the best possible start as goals from Jean II Makoun and a brace from Karim Benzema earned Lyon a comfortable victory.
Puel, speaking on Canal Plus television, said afterwards: “It’s great to win by such a large margin when we are not yet 100 percent physically.”
The victory came at a cost however as French right back Francois Clerc was stretchered off after 40 mins with ligament damage in his left knee which may sideline him for some time.
Elsewhere, Marseille and Rennes fought out a thrilling 4-4 draw, while Paul le Guen’s new look PSG side went down 1-0 to Monaco.
Last years runners up Bordeaux defeated Caen 2-1 on Saturday thanks to goals from new signing Yoann Gourcuff and Fernando Cavenaghi.
The highly rated Gourcuff, on a season long loan from AC Milan, showed his quality with an impressive performance in the heart of the Bordeaux midfield.
