Maradona to Make Managing Debut
November 19, 2008
Diego Maradona will begin his reign of manager of Argentina tonight when they face Scotland at Hampden Park. All the pre-match build-up has revolved around the new Argentine manager who, despite limited managing experience, has gone straight into one of world football’s top jobs. The Argentine Football Association’s appointment has excited the nation, who will be expecting a victory tonight when the game kicks off at 20:00GMT. Following Alfio Basile’s time in charge, Argentina lie in thrid spot in the South American Wold Cup qualifying table, leaving them with a lot more work to do to secure qualification for a tournament that their new manager won single-handedly in 1986.
He will begin his reign by fielding a strong side that will be captained by Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano and is likely to feature Carlos Tevez and Newcastle’s Jonas Gutierrez. But, Barcelona star Lionel Messi is missing as he featured in the Olympic Games while Atletico Madrid sensation Sergio Aguero will also miss out as he has returned to Spain to be with his pregnant girlfriend, who is the daughter of the new manager.
