Moyes has lost it over Old Firm call

November 9, 2009

Everton’s miserable run of form at the time of typing must have got to manager David Moyes’ head following his call for the Old Firm to be handed a place in a two-tier Premier League.

It is not the first time I have discussed this persistent call for England’s top-flight to be extended to 36 teams, then split in two, have relegation abolished and then have Rangers and Celtic handed automatic places at the top table.

And every time the idea pops up, I cannot believe some people at the very top of the game are actually advocating for this to happen.

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside is the usual mouth piece for this outrageous plan of action so I was dumbfounded when Moyes spoke out to welcome the possibility with open arms this week.

Moyes argues that ‘Celtic and Rangers have as big a support as any team in England. From that point of view it would help the game in England if we need a boost in revenue.’

Yes great idea David but what about the clubs left in your homeland who will have to get by without the two clubs who help bring revenue and crowds to the Scottish Premier League?

The chances are Scottish football would just go to the wall which is hardly a fair outcome when trying to bring more money into what is already one of the richest leagues in the world.

Moyes also argues that Welsh clubs have been invited to play in English football. Yes, good point, but I am sure fans of Cardiff and Swansea would argue that their clubs earned the right to be in the upper echelons of the Championship by working their way through the lower leagues.

In a Premier League 2 format it seems Rangers and Celtic would just jump the queue and be straight in with the rest of the big boys.

As for no relegation from the Premier League 2, that has to be the biggest joke of the whole idea!

The whole point of clubs in the lower divisions is to aspire into becoming a Premier League club – look at Hull, Wigan and Stoke in recent years – none of those clubs would be where they are now without the licence to move through the divisions!

Relegation battles have provided the main source of entertainment in past seasons and removing that would take all of that tension and drama out of the game and utterly ruin it!

So Mr Moyes I suggest you concentrate on reviving Everton’s fortunes and leave the politics of the game to someone who knows better!
