The front page of the online version of Francefootball.fr sees Cristiano Ronaldo officially declared winner of the 2008 Golden Ball Award.
After numerous rumours that it was going to be Cristiano Ronaldo to lift the Ballon D’or award last week, the rumours are in fact true and it is the Portuguese winger who wins the award with 446 points. His closest (yet still far away) was Lionel Messi with 286 points. Fernando Torres finished third 179 points. Last year’s golden ball winner, Kaka finsihed in eighth place with 31 points.
Ronaldo’s impressive feat of 42 goals and a double with his club Manchester United stressed further the point that it would be him the winner of this year’s award. Ronaldo surely deserves the award for last season’s performance but I wouldn’t be sure if his magical stuff is continous. Sure he has the required ability but it is either pressure or stupidity that gets the Portuguese winger under some disillusions. We will only have to wait and see as to whether he can repeat the same feat of scoring as many goals this season.
