Rangers Book Place in League Cup Final

Walter Smith watched his Rangers side book their place in the League Cup Final at Hampden last night but immediately dismissed the prospect of a domestic treble.

The Champions, who are 10 points clear at the top of the SPL, comfortably overcame the challenge of St. Johnstone but Smith warned that injuries could wreck Rangers season.

He said: “There is a spirit and determination about these players there is no doubt about that. The way the team keeps going is fantastic, it really is.

“But we are up against the problem of suspensions and injuries because we have a small group of players and when some are missing that puts stress on the ones who are playing. At this point injuries could ruin the season for us.”

Goals from Steve Davis and Lee McCulloch secured an easy win for Rangers despite heavy snowfall making playing conditions treacherous.

Man of the moment Davis was again involved in most of Rangers attacks in a first half where the Champions barley got out of first gear.

The Northern Irishman has been Rangers most consistent performer this term and opened the scoring on 26 minutes after tapping in a Novo cross.

Rangers extended their lead on 37 minutes courtesy of Lee McCulloch’s 20 yard drive that somehow squirmed under the body of the unfortunate Graeme Smith in the St. Johnstone goal.

The Ibrox side had an opportunity to add to their lead in the second half when referee Dougie McDonald awarded substitute Stevie Naysmith a penalty following a foul by Saints defender Gary Irvine.

The youngster got up and took the penalty himself but Graeme Smith did well to save the spot kick much to Naysmith’s dispare.

In all this was a fairly predicatable win for Rangers who will now face St Mirren in next months Hampden showdown.
