The BIG Match Preview - Liverpool vs. Manchester United

September 12, 2008

Date: September 13th, 2008.

Location: Anfield.

League: Barclays Premier League.

Event: Possiby the biggest football derby in the world. Ever.

Yes, this Saturday at 12.45 sees bitter rivals Liverpool and Man United go face-to-face in the most highly anticipated fixture on the footballing calendar. Not only is it a clash between the two most successful football teams in Britain; Liverpool having won the most League titles and European Cups in Britain, and Man United current holders of both the Champions’ League and the Premier League; it is also a battle of two cities, two distinct cultures in the north-west of England. The Scousers against the Mancs.

However, as a Liverpool fan, this fixture has been a bit of a curse over the years. In fact, it has been a very big curse. Indeed, the Reds haven’t beaten the enemy in the league since April 24th 2004, when a solitary Danny Murphy penalty was enough to secure the Reds three points at Old Trafford. Since that day, watching the Reds face the Red Devils in the league has been a harrowing and deeply frustrating experience for me and for many other Liverpudlians.

Perhaps the fact that Benitez is at the helm is why we have never beaten them during his tenure; I certainly hope that this isn’t the case, however he has had a tendency to concentrate on the Champions League during the season, as his tactics are more suited towards the European game. Benitez’ only victory over Ferguson came in 2006 in the Fifth Round of the F.A Cup at Anfield, when we went on to win it. A good omen if we manage to beat them on Saturday? Hopefully, but that if is a very big if indeed.
