Benitez eyes winning steak after win at Old Trafford

March 15, 2009

It was fairly obvious to everyone that Liverpool needed to win at Manchester United if they had any chance of winning the title. As we know, they did this in emphatic fashion with a dominant 4-1 victory over the Champions.

What next for Liverpool though? Well, following the win in Manchester, Rafa Benitez has challenged his team to win their remaining nine Premier League games.

According to the
Liverpool boss, this is the only way they are going to win the title instead of Manchester United. He says that having defeated two of the best teams in Europe during the week, his team can ‘beat anybody’.

The Spaniard revealed that there is an increased ‘belief and confidence’ that his team can close the gap on the league leaders. Liverpool now sit four points behind the Red Devils, although Alex Ferguson’s men do have a game in hand.

Benitez went onto admit that it will be ‘very difficult’ to sufficiently close the gap in the coming weeks, but that ‘you never know what can happen in football’.

As for the victory over Manchester United that has given his team a fighting chance, Benitez was full of praise for Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. Both played a huge role on Saturday and he believes that ‘the rest of the team have more confidence’ when they are on the pitch.

In terms of Benitez’s suggestion that Liverpool need to win all of their remaining games, this is probably the case. Manchester United aren’t likely to lose too many of their remaining games, but if they do – Liverpool need to be there ready to pounce.
