Many Liverpool fans will still be smarting at yet another Alex Ferguson masterstroke in the signing of former Anfield hero Michael Owen.
Some though will be wondering if they can go one better this season and finally clinch the Premier League title.
Rafael Benitez has made one major signing so far this summer with England right back Glen Johnson moving from Portsmouth.
This is a good acquisition for Liverpool and will enhance an already strong squad but it is unlikely there will be many more big names coming through the Shankly Gates in the near future.
That is unless they sell some of the current squad, with Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso supposedly transfer targets for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.
This though would weaken the squad and Rafa Benitez has expressed his desire for the pair to remain at Anfield.
The likes of Carlos Tevez and David Silva from Valencia have been earmarked by Benitez as possible buys but it depends on if he can persuade the club’s American owners to loosen the purse strings for an assault on the title.
There is no doubt that the Reds will be in the top four once again and with the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Tevez from Manchester United this has possibly left the door ajar for Liverpool to overtake them into top spot.
If Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres can stay fit for the majority of the season and continue their outstanding partnership, that long wait for the Premier League title could be over.
