Dimi’s Double
October 1, 2008
United’s Champions league defence went up a gear when DB9 struck a brace against Aalborg helping The Devils on their way to 3-0 victory over the Danes.
Their first win of the new European campaign makes the Group E table look considerably healthier, after an anaemic opening draw with Villarreal in their previous outing.
The game came to life when Rooney gave United the lead on twenty-two minutes. After which the baton passed to Berbatov who, half an hour later, broke his United duck volleying past a hapless ‘keeper. He added his second – a ‘crowd-pleaser’ ten minutes from time with an inspiring acrobatic effort which he later described as a “tap in”, although to those watching it was anything but.
A fine victory was the perfect way for United to christen their new 1968 tribute kit. However, the night was dampened by the injury to legendary Paul Scholes, who with medial knee ligament damage, could be out for up to 10 weeks and only lasted 16 minutes on the night before injury. This is a massive blow to United’s campaign on all fronts, not only because of the vital goals and midfield presence created by the veteran maestro, but also because of his talismanic importance to the United way. He will be sadly missed until his return. Upon which the crowd will no doubt make him feel like he’s never been away.
Scholes’ absence for a significant part of the season is likely to give Anderson some small but mighty boots to fill. We will look forward to seeing the development of this forceful midfielder over the coming 10 weeks.
Scholes’ injury was not the only damper on the evening, Rooney also left the field after sustaining an ankle knock, and was replaced by Tevez for yet another impressive display in a United shirt.
The Argentinean-come-Mancunian front man again showed his natural desire for winning in the half hour that he was given, a work ethic like that is sure to make him a true United legend.
