Gallas Shows His True Colours
November 21, 2008
William Gallas has been captain at Arsenal for just over a year now and to everyone except Arsene Wenger he seems to be the worst possible candidate.
Since his temper tantrum at Birmingham City last season which coincided with Arsenal falling by the wayside in the title race, it has been apparent that Gallas is not captain material.
It was widely expected that Wenger would use the close season to give the captain’s armband to someone else, perhaps Toure or Fabregas but he backed Gallas who has certainly not repaid the faith shown in him.
Now Gallas has come out this week and launched a stinging attack on his team-mates claiming they lack bravery and revealing in-fighting within the Arsenal dressing room.
Perhaps Gallas should look a little closer to home, his ridiculous actions at St Andrews last season were beyond petulant and showed a lack of class required to captain a club like Arsenal.
He is without doubt an excellent player and put in a virtuoso performance in the recent victory over rivals Manchester United but the defeat by Aston Villa last weekend revealed Arsenal’s frailties once again.
Gallas was critical of his side after the loss, he said: “We are not brave enough in battle. I think we need to be soldiers. We have to be warriors. There are teams who can do it well against us and we have to be able to face up to these attacks.”
Gallas was hardly blameless in the defeat to Villa, being easily pushed off the ball by Gabby Agbonlahor who went on to fire in Villa’s second and decisive goal.
Hardly the act of a warrior and to publicly criticise his team-mates is hardly the act of good captain.
Surely Arsene Wenger will say enough is enough and strip Gallas of the captaincy and give it to one of his young guns.
The extra responsibility of being skipper for someone like Cesc Fabregas could further improve his game and with so many of his colleagues being a similar age he could relate to them.
