Once again, Hull City defied the odds, and shocked another top four side, this time drawing 2-2 at Anfield against Liverpool, although they led 2-0. Phil Brown opted to play Bernard Mendy on the right, after his recent impressive displays as a substitute. City had an early shout for a penalty, as the ball appeared to hit Javier Mascherano’s arm, but Alan Wiley waved away appeals, and awarded a corner instead, in which Michael Turner headed over. Liverpool started quick, trying to get an early goal, Albert Riera coming closest, but his effort was deflected wide of Myhill’s goal.
City took the lead on 12 minutes, Geovannis free-kick was to long, King retrieved, and crossed onto the head of Paul Mcshane, and into Reinas net. 10 Minutes later, City doubled their advantage. Bernard Mendy ran at Liverpool’s right, before playing a low ball into the area, and as Jamie Carragher attempted to clear, only succeeded in putting the ball into his own net and send the travelling fans into scenes of delirium.
Liverpool hit back straight away, Kuyt’s ball found fell to Gerrard, who neatly squeezed the ball beyond Myhill, although there was a disputable foul by Riera on Turner. City then had to alter there tactics, with Mcshane been forced on injured, with Dean Marney coming on in Midfield, and Mendy dropping to Right Back. Liverpool then levelled, Benayoun fed Gerrard, who smashed the ball in on the half volley from close range.
Liverpool then pushed to take the lead before the break, Alonso coming closest with a shot from outside the box, which flew just beyond Myhill’s right hand post. After the Break, Liverpool pushed hard for the illusive winner, Hyypia hit the post, Myhill denied Reina, and Alonso could only find the roof of the net with his effort. Geovanni had a chance to give City there lead again, but fired wide of Reina’s post.
Liverpool pushed for a winner in the dying minutes, with Nabil El Zhar coming closest, but Phil Browns men held out once again to shock the footballing world, and will be looking to gain three points, as managerless Sunderland visit the KC next Saturday.
