28 year old Robbie Keane has today undergone a medical at Liverpool training ground Melwood and is expected to sign a contract worth £80,000-a-week within a couple of days. The Irish captain will be the fifth first team signing by Rafa Benitez this transfer window with Diego Cavalieri, Andrea Dossena, Philipp Degen and David N’Gog having already signed. The £18,000,000 move from Tottenham has the possibility of becoming the second highest ever transfer paid by Liverpool after the Fernando Torres transfer last summer, with an add-on bonus of £2,000,000 to be paid should Liverpool win either the Champions League or Premiership whilst Keane is still at the club, making the total come to £20,000,000.
The Tottenham striker, who had experienced a career of constant transfers, seemed to have settled himself at Tottenham, having been the clubs captain while Ledley King had been constantly injured. This signing will definitely help Liverpool challenge for the Premier League Title which has so far eluded them, however Liverpool fans and staff alike will know that the squad is still subject to more strengthening to finally make the push to become Premier League champions.
This transfer will cast doubts over the future of Gareth Barry and his transfer to Liverpool, especially as recent reports suggest Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill is willing to ‘forgive and forget’ and has offered the Villa captain a new four-year contact.
