Man Utd linked with mystery star
July 18, 2008
Manchester United have made a bid for an un-named player, believed to be Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the offer but would not specify the player’s identity.
“We have made a bid for one player who would enhance us a great deal,” Ferguson said before the Premier League and European champions set off on a pre-season tour of Africa.
United have been tracking the Bulgaria hit-man for several years, and Spurs will let him go for a price close to £30 million.
It has been speculated that United started the bidding with a £20 million bid. They are, however, prepared to increase the offer in a test of the London club’s resolve, as boss Juande Ramos sizes up his own targets.
Berbatov has long been a United target, with many surprised when he moved from Leverkusen to Spurs in 2006, after United had already spent that year’s transfer kitty on Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic. He was also linked with Old Trafford last season, but United again spent their budget on midfield trio Owen Hargreaves, Anderson and Nani. United have also been linked with Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn), Radamel Falcao (River Plate), Alexis Sanchez (Udinese) and - should Real Madrid follow up their interest in Cristiano Ronaldo - a part-exchange deal involving Robinho.
