Newcastle 0 - 1 Hull City
January 15, 2009
Hull City got back on to winning ways, as they beat Newcastle at St James Park for the second time this season, with Daniel Cousin’s 81th Minute goal proving decisive. Craig Fagan made his first start, since breaking his leg earlier in the season at St James Park, which was just one of Phil Brown’s changes, with Duke, Doyle, Garcia, Boateng, France, Halmosi, and Cousin all coming in to the team, from the side that was beaten at Everton at the weekend, as Boateng captained the side, with youngsters Nicky Featherstone and Will Atkinson having an opportunity, being placed on the bench.
City pushed early on, but failed to get any shots on target, Two Halmosi corners couldn’t find any men in white, and it was Halmosi who almost had an opportunity, but Newcastles full back, David Edgar, intercepted. Xisco found himself with the first real opportunity of the games, but fired over the bar from 12 yards out following Gutierrez’s cross. The closest chance of the half came whne Duff’s free kick found Nicky Butt, but his header came off the crossbar and to safety. Two rash challenges by Fabricio Coloccini was finally punished my Mr Dowd, after two fouls on Daniel Cousin, which led to Phil Brown, and newcastle boss Joe Kinnear, standing head to head with each other on the touchline, and then being sent to the stand. Owen then blasted over when he should of done better.
The travelling Tigers seemed to have thought Garcia’s strike had counted, but the referree had spotted a push on N’Zogbia by Fagan in the box, and the goal was ruled out. The first chance of the second half fell , once again, to Owen, as he broke the offside trap and faced Matt Duke one on one, but was thwarted by Dukes magnificent save, as the ball rolled agonisingly wide of the Hull goal. City took the lead with ten minutes to go, Mendys run was halted by Colocinnni, the ball fell to Garcia, whoes ball was fired across the box, and diverted in by Cousin, to send a small minority of the crowd inside St James Park in to delerious scenes.
Newcastle then threw everything at a possible equaliser, with Carroll heading over from a well placed position, and Owen missed an even better chance, as he headed over Guthrie’s cross from eight yards out, and unmarked.Newcastle continued to push in the 5 minutes added time, with Shay Given coming forward for a corner, which fell to LuaLua, but his effort was well of target. The final whistle was met by a crecendo of boos from the home crowd, as they was knocked out another cup, which meant they would hadve to wait another year, for that ilusive piece of silverware.
Millwall will face Hull a week on saturday at the KC Stadium, and Brown and Kinnears war continued into their after match press conferences, with Brown claiming ‘ I am just passionate about my team, football, and it gets me into trouble from time to time, like tonight’, whilst Kinnear claimed ‘ His side were robbed, Hull came for a smash and grab, and got it’ , aswell as claiming Collocini shouldn’t of been booked for two reckless challenges on Cousin, a case of sour grapes?
