Newcastle to offer Michael Owen a new deal

December 15, 2008

Against Portsmouth on Sunday, Michael Owen produced the kind of finish that he has become known for during his illustrious career. It was a brilliant take and underlines that at 29 he still has much to offer despite his injury problems. Question is - will that be at Newcastle, or will he move on to pastures new?

What has not helped the Owen situation is the turmoil that has gripped the club for the last 3 months, following the departure of Kevin Keegan. However, no new buyer for the club has come forward and at last moves have been made to get Owen behind the negotiation table. Newcastle have made an offer, so it is now up to Owen and his advisers.

Since joining Newcastle, Owen has been continually linked with a move away from the club by sections of the media. No move has transpired as yet - mainly due to his injury problems. Also during that time, Owen has lost his England place - not only the team, but also sitting out of Capello’s last few squads. However, if he maintains his goalscoring form then he has to surely come back into the England manager’s plans.

As for Newcastle supporters - many hope he will choose to stay with the club beyond his new contract. There is also a realisation that that hope may well be forlorn, though.

So Michael Owen - over to you.
