Robbie Keane signs for Liverpool
July 29, 2008
Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Republic of Ireland international Robbie Keane from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee believed to rise to £20.3 million.
Keane received the number 7 shirt, recently vacated by Harry Kewell who moved to Galatasaray a few weeks ago. Fellow number 7s at Anfield in the recent past have been Harry Kewell, Vladimir Smicer,
Keane turned down the reds in 1997, to join Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he scored 24 goals in 73 games. He then moved to Coventry, where he got 12 in 31. A move to Italy to boost his Republic of Ireland chances followed, however he failed to score in 6 appearances for Internazionale. He went on loan to Leeds United, where he scored 9 in 18 appearances. He then completed his move to Leeds in summer 2001, scoring 4 in 28. He then got his big premier league break, by joining Tottenham Hotspur, where he made nearly 200 appearances, scoring 80 goals.

Fans Perspective
Coming from a Liverpool fan, I am happy that we have signed Keane. He is almost perfect for Torres as he can play just off the Spaniard. I’m not too sure that he is worth £20 million, but I have said that before and I was wrong, so maybe it will be ok. He has a couple of pre-season fixtures to play with Torres so I presume Rafa will play around and try and find the best partnership. Along with Gerrard, we could see the forming of the best partnership Liverpool have had in a while. I think Tottenham Hotspur would be upset but not all surprised the Keane has gone as he wants European (Champions League) football, something he will get on a regular basis for the reds.
