Spurs Hit Five Past Doncaster

August 27, 2009

Spurs convincingly beat Doncaster 5-1 in their opening Carling Cup match. Harry gave his usual starting lineup a rest and introduced a whole new squad, who performed brilliantly. Their lineup consisted of: Carlo Cidicini, Alan Hutton, Sebastien Bassong, Vedran Ćorluka, Kyle Naughton, David Bentley, Tom Huddlestone, Jamie O’Hara, Giovani Dos Santos, Peter Crouch, and Roman Pavlyuchenko. Vedran Ćorluka captained the team.

It was only 8 minutes into the game before Spurs opened the scoring through Tom Huddlestone. Pretty soon, Jamie O’Hara, Peter Crouch, and David Bentley were on the score sheet as well. After an hour gone of the clock, Doncaster finally found the back of the net as Wood fired one in. But it was all too late as Roman Pavlyuchenko finished out the night with Spurs’ fifth goal. Doncaster once more tried for a second goal as they hit the woodwork, but were unlucky.

Now with all four strikers doing well, Harry is pleased with his squad. After the match he complimented, “You are looking for the lads who haven’t been playing to come in and do a good job. I made lots of changes but I’m lucky in that I can bring in two strikers like Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko and the likes of David Bentley and Giovani, so I’ve still a strong forward line even though I’ve rested all the four who have been playing. It’s a great problem to have. We’re lucky in that we can rotate the strikers occasionally and we can do different things against different teams. It’s a long season and we’ll need four strikers and it’s great to have those options.”

On Doncaster Harry commented, “It was a good win for us but I’ve got to say I was impressed with Doncaster. I thought they started well and Carlo Cudicini had to make two great saves. I know it’s easy when you’ve won 5-1 to say how good the other team was but I genuinely thought they played some great football, the way they passed it, the angles they found and they had chances as well. We took our chances and our keeper’s made some vital saves.”

Spurs face Birmingham at the Lane on Saturday.
