Spurs Suffer Wolves Setback

December 15, 2009

A third minute opener by Kevin Doyle off a free kick sealed the game for Wolves in a 1-0 victory at White Hart Lane. After the goal, Wolves made it extremely difficult for the home side. Spurs got off some fair shots through Niko Kranjčar, Robbie Keane, and Tom Huddlestone, but couldn’t finish. Manager Harry Redknapp deemed the afternoon, “just one of those days.”

In the 58th minute, Luka Modrić made his first, much awaited appearance since August. Shortly after, Giovani dos Santos also made his come-back from an 8 week ankle injury. Despite the positives for Spurs, the loss put them out of the top four. They now sit fifth just points outside the top four and points above the rest of the table.

Upon Luka’s return, he thanked the fans for their warm “welcome-back”. He told the official Tottenham website, “The reception the fans gave me when I came on meant a lot to me. They have been great and I want to thank them for that. I’m glad to be back but overall I’m disappointed because we lost the game. Now we just need to turn it around and win on Wednesday.”

After their defeat Harry Redknapp summed it up by saying, “Wolves defended for their lives. We had loads of the bal but couldn’t find that killer pass or finish to get the goal back. It’s hard when teams sit in, and it is different when teams come forward. They got the goal and didn’t have to come at us, they could sit in and make it difficult.
He continued, “It’s football. It wasn’t through lack of effort. We worked just as hard but just couldn’t get the break that we needed. Some days it goes your way and other days it doesn’t – unfortunately, it was one of those days.”

Next up, Spurs host Manchester City at the Lane. Spurs have had an overall great start to the season despite the last few disappointing results. In 16 games, their record is 8-5-3. Hopefully tomorrow another three points will restore them to fourth on the table.
