Time for Arsenal to splash the cash
May 11, 2009
As we reflect on yesterdays London derby between Arsenal and Chelsea we must now look to a very important summer ahead for both clubs, when this fixture was made last summer it is hard to think that such a game would be of little importance at the business end of the season, afterall this was the year when Wenger’s young guns were to come of age and the addition of Scolari to the helm at Stamford Bridge was to bring a new flamboyant and successful age to the Blues.
Instead we find ourselves taking part in post mortems of each team, while Hiddink steadied the ship and reignited the season of Drogba and others Chelsea fans will still look back on what could have been after such a positive start under Scolari and we must also remember come May 30th the manager search begins again. For Arsenal they are now at a crossroads, Wenger will be haunted by the taunt of “men versus babies”, but today he reiterated the fact it was an evolution that lay ahead and not a revolution at the Emirates.
This brave approach while it must be applauded we have to remember that football is a results business and the floods of Gunner fans leaving early at recent games suggests discontent, gone be the days of the great spine of the invincibles led by experienced heads such as Pires, Viera, Campbell and Lehmann, Arsenal’s time may come again but with Rooney, Ronaldo and Co all in their early twenties and Rafa’s future now alot clearer, one would think that Wenger will have to defy his own theory and try blend in youth and experience, all in all it is sure to be a very exciting summer ahead for London’s big two.
