Wright-Phillips Returns to City

Shaun Wright-Phillips completed a transfer from Chelsea to Manchester City today after both clubs agreed to terms. This follows 3 disappointing seasons from the diminutive, pacy midfielder; who in 65+59 games only managed to score 10 goals; he originally signed in the summer of 2005 – after Chelsea’s first league title – to provide depth for Arjen Robben and Damien Duff, both injury prone players.

This story may be bittersweet to Blues fans, as when Shaun was in form he was excellent. The negative side of speedy midfielder is his inconsistency and relatively woeful finishing. Fans will remember that there were many games this past season that should and could have been killed off, if he could put the ball in the net. There were a few occasions with a relatively open net only requiring a cool slot home that he could just not manage.

This deal should mark the arrival of Brazilian Robinho; a summer long transfer target for the Blues.
