Smith thinks Thomson will be a huge miss
November 11, 2008
Kevin Thomson had struggled to find the form that earned him a big money move to Rangers as he took time to settle in at Ibrox, but just as he was starting to show his true ability to the team he looks set to miss the next 8 months with a knee injury.
Smith said: “It’s a blow to ourselves but it’s also a huge blow to Kevin. He has been doing extremely well for us in recent weeks.”
He added: “Having experienced the same injury a few years ago, it’s obviously a blow to him as much as to ourselves.
“I think the biggest frustration for Kevin will be the fact that he has had his settling-in period at Rangers and was doing extremely well and was now playing at the level I would expect him to play at.
“It’s a big disappointment for everyone that this has happened.”
Asked how Thomson is dealing with the prospect of another lengthy lay-off, Smith added: “He is okay, the experience of having already had the injury might help him get over the disappointment.
“But I think it will take a few weeks before he gets over it.”
The loss of Thomson has coincided with the return of skipper Barry Ferguson, who has made several substitute appearances after recovering from ankle surgery.
“That happens and I suppose that’s football in many ways,” said Smith. “We are now getting Barry back, which is a plus for us. But it is a big loss for us that Kevin is missing out.”
